The Trailer Park That So Many Sexual Predators Call Home

Many of you read on my blog recently, and probably saw on multiple news sources as well, the story of the horrific murder of a young girl living in an Indiana trailer park.  While there are still so many unanswered questions regarding why the accused killer Michael Plumadore would bludgeon a child to death with a brick and how he was entrusted with her care in the first place, there are some shocking details being revealed about the environment in which both the victim and her attacker lived.

This particular trailer park in Fort Wayne, Indiana is home to fifteen registered sex offenders and only 24 homes overall.  That means more than half of the residences in that park contain a person who has been convicted of a sex crime.  Even the young victim, Aliahna Lemmon, had recently moved to that location with her mother and siblings so that her mom could help care for her father, a man convicted of child molestation in 2006.

It’s terrifying to think that there are probably neighborhoods that serve as havens for child molesters and other sexual predators all across our country.  With the understandable geographic restrictions placed on them by the law, I guess it’s inevitable that certain areas would become known as “safe spots” for sex offenders to live.  The thought of so many people convicted of these despicable crimes congregating together seems like something out of a crime novel.  Unfortunately, this is reality and not a scene typed on an author’s computer screen.

What is the solution?  These convicts need to stay away from schools and daycares and the like, but these pockets of highly concentrated sex offenders are frightening as well.  The thought of even a single child living there, and knowing that there were several girls in the park, is tragic.  I sincerely hope Aliahna’s mother chooses a safer home for her other children immediately.

What is the solution to this growing problem?

The Evolving World of DNA

The use of DNA technology is growing in every country around the globe.  DNA databases help to solve crimes, identify missing individuals, aid identification in mass disasters or past conflicts, assist with cold cases, and exonerate the innocent.  The power of DNA can’t be overstated in the world of forensic science and crime scene investigation.

Within the past twenty years, there has been an improved understanding of how DNA systems and databases can be used more effectively.  There is no doubt that CSI shows, of course incorrect at times and fictional, have actually interpreted how this “CSI effect” has impacted judges, lawyers, and juries to examine the weight of DNA evidence.  This type of evidence has gone from being rarely used to being demanded in the criminal court system.

The technology for collecting and examining DNA evidence has improved drastically.  It has been made possible to collect biological samples (blood, sweat, semen, etc.) left behind at a current crime scene or from the skeletal remains decades old.  It’s amazing that today it’s possible to get results from trace or touch evidence with only several hundred cells of biological material for testing.

Interestingly, patterns from large-scale DNA testing of felons and other arrestees have been able to show that some criminals actually graduate in their criminal activities.  A petty theft or burglary may eventually turn to more violent types of crimes.  The power of having DNA databases can actually help to solve crimes, such as rape or homicide, from someone who was arrested for a traffic citation.

With every positive scientific advancement for the criminal justice system, there comes the down side that seems to hover in the shadows.  DNA evidence is only as good as the testing, equipment, abilities of scientists, and proper protocols set from the police departments and crime labs.  It’s imperative to make sure that these “proper” protocols and trained personnel continue to be of the highest quality and training as possible.

In the next five to ten years, countries with undeveloped forensic laboratories and systems or none at all will create these DNA databases.  Today, the evolving new world of DNA will continue to grow around the world and will continue to bring together evidence, guilty parties, and solve crimes.  As fast as the technology seems to be evolving, DNA testing will continue to become better understood and accepted more freely, and have a major impact on national and international justice.

Where do you think they should draw the line to collecting DNA evidence?

Do you think that everyone should have to give a DNA sample when they receive their driver’s license?

Babysitter Arrested in Gruesome Death of Young Indiana Girl

When you think of the holiday season that most of us are currently enjoying, you probably picture the faces of children who rush down the stairs to see what Santa left under the tree or who sing their sweet carols for proud parents at the school’s winter concert.  It should be a magical time to be a child, so it is gut-wrenching to read stories of boys and girls who instead are victims of violence during this season.

Aliahna Lemmon was a nine-year-old girl in Indiana who had been missing since Friday night.  Her body was found on Monday and the “close family friend” who was reportedly babysitting her while her mom recovered from the flu, Michael Plumadore, has confessed to killing her.

Plumadore shared that he hit the young girl repeatedly in the head with a brick and then dismembered her body.  In a further gruesome act, and one that is reminiscent of the depravity done by Jeffrey Dahmer, he threw most of the girl’s body parts into a commercial trash bin but kept her head, hands, and feet in his freezer.

It is difficult to imagine that such heinous violence came without warning.  I will be curious to read the further details about this man’s personality and past that we are certain to learn over the upcoming days and weeks.  Were there no signs that he was a violent man and, in particular, a monster who could do such a thing to an innocent child?

Plumadore was a neighbor of Lemmon’s mother and she obviously trusted him with the care of Aliahna (as well as Aliahna’s two sisters). There is no doubt that many will question this decision and I already have read comments from people raising concern about the mom’s decisions concerning the safety of her kids.  Let’s be clear, though; the proven fault is only with Michael Plumadore and I hope that in short course Indiana will provide him with the stiff justice that he deserves.

What Happens When a Crime Writer is Dropped Into the Country?

Once upon a time… about five years ago, I moved to a country location near the California coastline.  Please note that I’ve never lived in the country or any “rural” area before.  Basically, I’m a city girl that loves structured streets with sidewalks, streetlights, parks, and city water.  I don’t mind most traffic and the sounds of a city, you get used to it because it’s just a part of life.

It was time.  By that I mean it was time for a change.  It’s wonderful, even liberating, to have a little space around you and some breathing room with fresh air.  It actually wasn’t a difficult decision to move to the country because we were able to get a bigger house, more property, and a huge storage area.  The views around my property and country neighborhood are breathtaking.

Ah yes, the fresh air of the country and the quiet solitude of nature…

With beauty and solitude comes some unexpected surprises.  Oh, did I mention the native wildlife?  Even in the country, where neighbors are farther apart than in cities, they can still hear my shrill screams whenever I run into some creepy crawly animals and insects.  Yep, my startling scream should be recorded for Halloween sound effects for everyone to enjoy.

Besides the stalking squirrel in my yard, there’s a variety of extra large snakes, rats, spiders the size of guinea pigs, variety of lizards, gophers the size of cats, bats, and a mountain lion that makes his appearance through my yard every once in a while.  I know this because I’ve tracked the big cat’s footprints.  You don’t even have to be familiar with forensics to recognize those paw marks imprinted into the dirt.

For me as a criminologist, I’m acutely aware of crime trends and potential problems in any neighborhood.  In the country, there are challenges of burglaries and even home invasions.  I have to say that my neighborhood is tough and no on takes to anyone scanning the area that shouldn’t be here.  If you don’t have any reason to be on my street, then you better be ready for the neighborhood gauntlet.  Love that!  I think they would inspire my heroine Emily Stone to some degree.

My creative mind that writes crime fiction has incorporated these new experiences with a vivid imagination into my Emily Stone Series.  Especially at night when the there’s no moon visible, the country is a very dark and quiet place.  I stand still and listen to any sounds I can hear.  It’s usually a deer or some type of bird nesting.  I try not to think about the more frightening or macabre.  I seem to conjure up all kinds of situations in my mind for my heroine to experience and go up against.  The country has intrigued and agreed with me.

With all my new experiences in the country, it all boils down to on thing – I love it here.

So what happens when a crime writer is dropped into the country? Another new tale is spun for all to read.

What are some of your experiences in the country?

Violent Crime Numbers Drop Again

As we enjoy all of the festivities of the holiday season, and Christmas is now less than a week away, it’s nice to be able to share some good news about what is happening on our streets!

The FBI released a report on Monday showing that the number of violent crimes that occurred in this country during the first six months of the year decreased 6.4% when compared with the same time period last year.  This includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.  These numbers reflect the continuation of a downward trend that has been occurring for the past several years.  Property crimes are shown to be falling as well.

While there is frustration and financial hardship stemming from an economy that is still struggling, it is wonderful to see that the statistics fly in the face of the possible assumption that high unemployment numbers and many households in which budgets are being stretched would lead to more crime.  The amazing work of law enforcement officials at all levels certainly needs to be commended as they work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.  I have to imagine the always improving technology that is used to track criminals and their activities, as well as the many ways in which different departments can now communicate with one another, have helped in their efforts.

While she may be a work of fiction, Emily Stone does her part to fight crime within the pages of my novels and I like to think that she would contribute to those lowered crime numbers if actually serving on a squad somewhere.  If you have yet to meet Emily and discover her passion for tracking down the worst predators in society, please check out my latest release, Dark Mind.  When a serial killer stalks the island of Kauai looking for female victims to sacrifice to his god, Emily Stone and her trusted friends canvass the evil shadows within this piece of paradise to bring him to justice.  I hope you will give it a read and let me know what you think!
