The chaos of the crime scene told a story. #Serial #Suspense

Serial Suspense – Episode 4

Police cars encircled the small rural house.  Each vehicle parked precariously, but with an underlying plan known to cops.  The sound of heavy footsteps of police issue boots moved quickly in and out of the home. More cruisers entered the long dirt driveway, either to assist with the homicide investigation or out of the sheer curiosity of how an eight-year-old boy survived the brutal attack of the home invasion.

Inside the Baker’s house, assorted police personnel moved expertly in and out of the crime scene carefully documenting evidence.  The main objective was to peel away the evidence in order to tell the correct story.  They never disregarded anything that might prove useful.

A tall, dark-haired detective frowned as he sketched out scribbled drawings in his small spiral bound notebook.

Several flashes from a digital camera lit up the area giving the center stage a more of a grotesque discernment.

The detective’s solemn expression overshadowed his handsome face as he stood above the murdered couple.  Detective Matt Tower’s thought process consisted of running several possible scenarios and always keeping his options open.

His partner, shorter and muscular, Detective Kirby Bancroft stood next to him.  He fidgeted with his button down shirt.  The scene did not seem to bother him.  He asked, “What do you make of this?”

“You never get used to it. The vics are identified as Mr. Robert Baker and Mrs. Elaine Baker.”  He replied slowly.  “He worked as a truck driver and she was a stay at home mom.”

“It looks like a random home invasion.”  Bancroft glanced around the living room.  “They obviously didn’t do their homework.  The place is modest at best.  They couldn’t have gotten much.”

“They didn’t want any witnesses.”

“A hit maybe?”

“I don’t think so, but we’re checking on their backgrounds anyway.”

The detective slid the notebook back into his pocket.  He preferred paper to smart phones and iPads – he chose something he could feel, more tangible and solid.  He continued, “What I don’t get is how the boy survived?  Has he said anything yet?”

“Not yet.”

“He probably won’t be much help.  This is a trauma that will haunt him for the rest of his life…”

“The social worker is with him now.”

Detective Bancroft left his partners side to get further information from patrol officers first on the scene and one of the forensic technicians.

The police photographer continued to take images of the dead couple from many different angles.

Detective Bancroft returned and held up a plastic bag with a piece of fabric inside.  “The techs got this out of the woman’s hand.”

“What do you think?”  He scrutinized the tiny piece of cloth.

“Perp’s shirt maybe?”

“I want this fabric tested for any foreign substances, like DNA, or anything that wouldn’t be found in this home.  It could lead us to the killer or someone close to them.”

Bancroft squinted his eyes examining the bag.  “It looks like some type of army fatigue pattern…”

Towers knew where his partner was headed in his thinking.  “Like the kind that many ex-cons buy right out of the prison.” His mind still reeled with scenarios coming in rapid succession, “This home invasion could be linked to some of the robbery homicides from a few months ago.”

The detective’s conversation was interrupted by the managing forensic specialist as he carefully pried a bullet from one of the walls.  “Excuse me detective.”  His short, cropped grey hair made his face seem paler than it was in reality.  He now resembled more of an undertaker than a scientist.

Standing up straight, the forensic specialist asked, “What do you make of this?”

A High-Tech Voyeuristic Serial Killer in a DEAD GAME

DeadGameCoverAwardAn Award Winning Emily Stone Thriller

Saturday

1800 Hours

The room was entirely black.  There were special window coverings that didn’t allow a trace of light to enter from any other natural or unnatural sources.  Windows, doors, or other rooms didn’t exist in this environment.  It gave the illusion that the world was only a vast void because it had been obliterated from space.  The universe had given up the responsibility of one of its own planets to make more room for what evil lurks in the darkness.  It would soon take over and slowly obliterate what little goodness that had once inhabited it.

Three basic, utilitarian tables were positioned in a precise semicircle.  Suddenly, an almost blinding light illuminated, and filled the small intimate space.  Three large 27-inch flat screen monitors illustrated a video image of a beautiful woman, naked, terrified and confined to a chair.

She seemed groggy at first as her head bobbed slightly from side to side, but she slowly regained all her senses to discover herself naked, confined by a heavy cording, and unable to find any means of escape.  She tried to move, but her secured hands and mouth made it impossible to make much noise.  Her raven hair cascaded down in front of her breasts.

A soft re-energizing sigh escaped from Samuel’s lips.  He had seen the video more than a dozen times and each time the terror inflicted on the beautiful woman made it almost unbearable to wait for the next lingering moment of death.

Each time the excitement was more heightened than the last.  His core expanded and heat emanated from his entire body.  He felt the tips of his nerves tingle with a slight electric shock.  He continued to have erections every time she pleaded for her life.

Samuel’s dark green eyes darted back and forth between the computer screens as if he might miss something entirely if he watched just one at a time.  It was his slightly aging face, dark hair, receding hairline, and stern jaw showing years of contempt that drove his impulsive need for more.

More death.

More destruction of the human spirit.

And most importantly, more death reenactments via his perfect videos would be given for the betterment of society in his own twisted mind.

The dark-haired woman’s panic escalated another degree as the cord around her petite neck continued to tighten.  Her chest heaved as she struggled to breathe only through her nose.

Time was running out, but Samuel knew that he could relive this moment forever.  He imagined in his highly tuned mind what it would be like to take advantage of the woman in this condition.

He wanted her now.

He could taste her fear as he continued to watch utterly mesmerized.  He wanted to taste more of her, everything, just before the last throes of death.

The woman began to lose consciousness as her neck ruptured with direct precision.  She was gone, but her spirit would live on inside Samuel.  He could revive it whenever he wanted.

He had that power.

That was the true power he possessed over others.

His ultimate goal was to find two participants for his movie: a man and woman who were deeply in love.  One would watch as the other died right before their eyes.  He would savor that image for eternity.

Investigating the Psychological Autopsy

skull-brain

One of the most interesting aspects of studying criminal behavior and criminology is finding out why and how criminals commit a specific crime.  It’s really the complicated and daunting task of finding out what makes an individual tick and hopefully learning more about their criminal pattern of behavior in the process.  That is why it’s so important that every crime scene be treated as unique and investigated thoroughly.

Victimology is an information gathering tool that investigators use to help them to link a perpetrator to a victim that could ultimately solve the crime.  Victimology refers to the analysis of the victim’s characteristics, such as, how they lived, who they were, how they spent their time, and then the determination of their risk assessment.  Answers to these questions can lead investigators and profilers to determine the offender’s motive and MO of why and how they chose this particular victim.

I found the term psychological autopsy intriguing and it’s the extension to victimology used by investigators and profilers.  A psychological autopsy is another information gathering technique that entails the review of the psychosocial aspects of a victim’s life.  It reconstructs the deceased victim’s psychological state leading up to and at the time of their death.  It includes the emotions, relationships, behaviors, and thoughts of the victim.  The most common source collected is the interview data obtained from the family and friends of the deceased.

There are two basic types of psychological autopsies that can be performed: the suicide psychological autopsy (SPA) and equivocal death psychological autopsy (EDPA).  The SPA is understanding which psychosocial factors contributed to the suicide.  The EDPA is performed when a particular death is not immediately known.

The term psychological autopsy was originally coined in 1958 by psychiatrist Edwin Shneidman from the Los Angeles Suicide Center as a means to refer to a procedure that was initially designed to assist the medical examiner in clarifying deaths that were uncertain or ambiguous.  It has been estimated that up to 20% of death cases have appeared to be unclear that have been presented to the medical examiner, which can’t address whether the death was the result of natural causes, accident, suicide, or murder.

Generally, those who conduct SPAs are psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals who have expertise in suicide.  Psychologists and psychiatrists with a background and training in forensic pathology and death investigation usually conduct EDPAs.

I feel that it’s important not only to look at the crime scene forensics, but also to look into the victim’s background to better understand how and why they were targeted by the perpetrator.  There are valuable insights that should not be overlooked in any death case through the eyes and thoughts of the deceased.

For more information on the procedure of psychological autopsy as well as an interesting read, check out the book Autopsy of a Suicidal Mind by Edwin S. Shneidman.

The men searched frantically to find the last victim. #Serial #Suspense

AJ_CoverSerialTHROUGH THE EYES OF ALBERT JOSEPH

Serial Suspense – Episode 3

The door slammed open with a bang.  Both killers entered AJ’s bedroom, angry and determined to find the little boy to silence him – permanently.

The bedroom was quiet and empty.

The taller man fumed, then his fists clenched as he tore posters off the walls and tossed toys from every surface.  The comforter, sheets, and pillows were thrown to the floor as the mattress was pulled from the race car frame.

Nothing.

His stocky partner madly combed through the closet searching for the boy.  “There’s no sign of the kid.”  He fumed.  “Maybe he’s at friend’s house or somethin’?”

“Keep looking.”

“I’m tellin’ you that he’s not here.”

The tall burglar stopped and turned to his partner with a steely, penetrating gaze.  There was nothing that he wasn’t capable of doing.  He spoke through his gritted teeth.  “For your sake that brat better be somewhere else.”

“Do you see him?  I’m telling you he’s not here…”

“Fine.  Let’s get the hell out of here.”

***

The modest house sat nestled in a wooded area in the middle of the night.  Thick trees acted as a shield from any neighbors or curious onlookers.  A steady breeze ignited.

Both men quickly left the house carrying a few of the Baker’s belongings and a total of sixty-seven dollars in cash.  They hustled into the dark woods where their getaway car waited.

The front door stood wide open and gently thumped against the frame.  The wind continued to build as dry leaves fluttered across the walkway and against the siding of the house.

***

A broken clock on the floor in the living room, which originally sat on the mantle, read 11:20pm.  Almost an hour passed since the burglars had left.

The Baker’s bodies were bloody and broken in heap in front of the shredded couch.  It was difficult to see their outlines at first with the chaos of destruction.

The entire house resembled a disaster where someone had picked it up and then dropped it from a high building.  A narrow walking path led into AJ’s bedroom where his closet was now empty with the contents covering the floor.

A soft thump followed by the sound of something sliding across the hard surface banged from above.  Slowly, a square opening to the attic moved to one side.  A small leg emerged.  Within a few moments, AJ peered down.  He hesitated.  Grief no longer washed over his face, but rather, a calm almost coma trance filled his body.

He dropped the tattered teddy bear and then lowered himself down to the floor.  His favorite cartoon pajamas were torn and dirty.  Picking up the stuffed toy, he stared at the bare four walls.

He waited and listened before he stepped into his bedroom.  He stopped again before taking another two-steps, and continued that same procedure until he stood at his bedroom doorway.

AJ stood frozen holding his teddy bear tightly in his arms, pressed hard against his chest as he stared into the living room.

What is Your Personality Type?

I don’t think anyone has not heard someone described as a Type A Personality in movies, a family member, or someone you work with on a regular basis.  Okay, I’m not immune to this personality type label.  I admit it, I’m driven, focused and I have goals for both my personal and business ventures, and…. I can be intense at times.

So is this a good or bad thing?

Well, I wanted to dig a little bit further to find out where this Type A Personality Type originated because it seems to be a given these days and a part of our everyday vocabulary.

Photo: Wikipedia, C.G. Jung 1910

Photo: Wikipedia, C.G. Jung 1910

I decided to start with someone who could answer this for me, Carl Jung (1875-1961), who started out with an interest (or rather fascination) with medicine and spiritual phenomenon, and then of course moved into psychiatry.  He struck up a friendship with Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), which greatly influenced his later theories and the study of the human mind through dreams, myths, art and philosophy.

From the website MBTI Type Today, it explains,

“The essence of Jung’s theory of psychological types is simple; when our minds are active and we are awake, we are alternating between taking in information and making decisions in our internal and external worlds. Jung identified eight different patterns for how we carry out these mental activities (now referred to as mental processes, functions-in-attitude, mental functions or cognitive processes). He created these patterns through combining his opposite pairs of attitudes and functions.”

Jung’s theory of the psychological types was that we approach the world with an attitude of either introverted or extroverted.  Then our perceptions (sensing or intuitive) and judgments (thinking or feeling) drive us, which in turn make up his eight mental processes.

Fascinating stuff!  This is a great way to analyze yourself or use it to create a fictional character in a story.  It adds depth and understanding into personality types and what makes an individual unique.

Definitions for Personality Types are typically described as:

Type A Personality:

Characterized by excessive ambition, competitiveness, drive, impatience, need for control, focuses on quantity over quality, and also has been described as aggressive.

Type B Personality:

Characterized by moderate ambition and drive, attitude cooperativeness, focuses on quality not quantity, and generally has an easy-going approach to life.

Type C Personality:

Characterized as having a lack of emotion, when in fact, they are frustrated and angry.  They may seem quiet and thoughtful, but there’s some unresolved feelings lurking below the surface.

So… I’m guessing that you’re seeing a clearer picture of yourself and some of the people you know.  I dislike labels, but it’s interesting to take a closer look and my take is that most people are a combination of personality types.  There is a nice balance of personality types that would make life easier, and make you a calmer and more focused person.

The next time someone calls you a Type A Personality, you can reply by saying you’re more of a Type B Personality with drive, ambition, and easygoing attitude.

Do you agree?

What’s your personality type?

He stood frozen unable to avert his gaze. #Serial #Suspense

AJ_CoverSerialTHROUGH THE EYES OF ALBERT JOSEPH

Serial Suspense – Episode 2

Screams in between muffled pleas came from the kitchen.  Mrs. Baker begged for her life with every ounce of energy she possessed.

The house became quiet.

The tall, thin man dragged the woman’s lifeless body along the floor into the living room and left her next to her husband covered in blood.  To his partner, he barked. “Hurry up!” Without wasting another word, he yanked off Mrs. Baker’s wedding ring and took Mr. Baker’s wallet.  He eagerly looked inside the billfold, swiped the cash, and took the only remaining two credit cards.

Mr. Baker groaned and tried to roll to one side.

“Where’s the rest!”  The burglar demanded at the barely conscious man. He shook the bloody knife in his face.

His partner in crime returned to his side and stated, “There’s nothing – just a couple hundred bucks and some cheap-ass jewelry.”  He searched the rooms systematically, throwing personal belongings onto the floor.  Lamps, hanging pictures, and assorted decorations shattered.  Couch pillows and seat cushions flipped over.

Nothing.

The short man fumed and clenched his fist.  Bending down, he punched Mr. Baker in the nose.  “Where’s the stuff!  This can’t be it!  Where is it!”  The wad of crumbled cash protruded between his fingers as he hammered the man’s face again.

Mr. Baker didn’t answer.

A rain of blood spatter covered the couch and back wall.

***

The bedroom door opened a tiny crack as AJ peered through the opening terrified and helpless.  He couldn’t bear to watch the bad men hurt his parents, but he was frozen and unable to avert his gaze.  He knew that he should call 9-1-1, but the only phone was in the kitchen.  His bare feet pressed hard into the floor.  He wished that he could become a superhero – just once.

AJ trembled more with every violent sound of the beating.

***

The Bakers were reduced to a bloody heap on the living room floor.

In a weak voice, Mr. Baker begged, “Please… please just leave… take anything you want and… leave…” He began to pray in muttered, painful words.

The short man told his partner, “Check the bedrooms.”  He wiped the blood and fingerprints from the knife, tossing it on the floor.  Staring down and shaking his head at the man, he said, “I don’t think so.”  He retrieved a gun from the back of his waistband, took careful aim, and fired three shots.

The couple was dead.  Mr. Baker had managed to take hold of his wife’s hand just before the fatal bullet blew through his skull.  The remains of the grisly scene told the entire horrifying story in graphic detail.

A laugh escaped the intruder’s lips, which accentuated his crooked teeth and sharp features.  He pulled out a stick of gum from his top pocket, carefully unwrapped the silver foil, and then gently placed it on his tongue.  He savored the flavor.  Blood still dripped from his hands.

“Hey!”  Called out his partner from the hallway.

“What did you get?  Money, gold, silver?  I bet they were hoarding it.”  He said with disgust.

“No man…”  The taller man appeared at the threshold to the living room holding a picture frame.  “There’s a kid.”

“What?”

“A kid man…”  He tossed the framed family photograph onto the floor.  The protecting glass cracked across the front, which left the smiling family strangely distorted.

“Dead witnesses don’t tell any stories…”

Both men headed toward AJ’s bedroom to finish the job.
