Father and Son Receive Same Sentence for Different Murders

handcuffed_man1

There are many parents who would be proud to have a child decide to follow in their footsteps.  Carry on the family business, build upon a legacy of philanthropy, join the military . . . whatever it may be.  But then there are instances in which sons choose the same path as their dads and the end results are just heartbreaking.  This is certainly the case with the all too common problem of violent behavior being handed down from generation to generation.

clip_image001Kentucky man Stacey Spencer will be spending the next twenty-five years of his life in prison after shooting a young Iraq war veteran, Clayton Meyer, a little more than a year ago in an attempted robbery.  Spencer was only seventeen when he committed the murder but was tried as an adult.

Spencer’s father, who shares his name, was not present in the courtroom during his son’s trial.  Instead, he was in prison already serving the exact same sentence that his son must now begin.  The older Spencer was convicted in 2006 of robbery, assault, and murder.

Our children can succeed coming from any environment.  There are many wonderful stories of young men and women who struggled through the most difficult of circumstances and broke the cycle of violence or drugs or abuse that had plagued their family.  But, we certainly make it harder for kids when what is modeled for them is a life of crime.

I am not making excuses for what Spencer did and he deserves to face the punishment he has earned for the horrible act he committed.  But, let’s hope that the habit of violence in this family ends with the current generation.

Is There any Truth to those Things that go Bump in the Night?

FirstWatch_cov_ebook

I’ve always been drawn to scary movies and books.  I enjoy sitting in the dark and watching one of the scariest movies I can find.  I’m not exactly sure why, but only to say that it’s fun to be scared in a fictional sort of way.  You would think that I would write books about ghosts and zombies instead of serial killers and police detectives.  Well, I might just surprise you someday.

About six years ago, I moved into my current home located in a rural area.  In the first week, the house made some really weird noises and unusual sounds that you would swear it was footsteps moving around in another room.  These were normal noises of a house settling because it had been vacant for almost a year, but it tested my imagination for writing in the horror genre.

I have several horror short stories rattling around in my head on any given day.  I decided to write my first short story last year, FIRST WATCH.  It’s my take on what moves around in the dark and along deserted roads late at night.  Maybe even what lurks in your own yard when you’re asleep at night.  And of course, I had to throw in the cop element for good measure.

FIRST WATCH takes you on a routine traffic stop from John McGraw’s point of view… and what happens next is well… a chase of epic proportions.

Amazon Reviewers had this to say:

“This was a very well written tale that gives a new twist to the popular monsters currently dwelling in our literature and films. It was definitely a worthwhile read for fans of horror and for authors looking to study how to create and hold suspense!”

“This story is written with intensity of fear, detailed as a thriller should be, and speed to make the reader devour it.”

“Unique and Original!”

What scares you about the dark? And has it changed from when you were a child?

Here’s a video teaser to the short story FIRST WATCH:

DNA under Fingernails Lead to Arrest in Decades-Old Cold Case

DNA_image

Every week seems to bring a new story of how advances in forensic technology are bringing closure to cold cases that had been held in police files without leads for ten years, twenty years, or longer.  The scientific community and law enforcement are working together to bring closure to families who just a few years ago may have thought the ability to find justice for a loved one seemed nearly impossible.

In Santa Clara County, California, the decades-old murder investigation of 21-year-old Saba Girmai reached an important moment this week when a convicted offender was arrested for strangling the young woman and leaving her body in a dumpster back in 1985.

The DNA of Daniel Garcia was found under the fingernails of Ms. Girmai using technology that was not available nearly thirty years ago when she was murdered.  It wasn’t until 2010 that a DNA profile was created from the material in her fingernails, and it was the following year that Mr. Garcia was determined to be a match.  An active investigation followed and, a day after he was questioned about his involvement in the attack, Garcia was arrested on murder charges.

clip_image001In defending herself and fighting for her life, Saba Girmai was able to collect the evidence that appears will put Daniel Garcia behind bars for murder.  Also, local law enforcement must be commended for their realization that someday the evidence they gathered may be used in ways of which they only could dream in 1985.  These investigators, and those like them around the country who meticulously maintain crime scene materials, have made a huge difference to many families.

While I hate that such efforts are even necessary, it always is amazing to me to read about the perseverance and dedication that police officers have to tracking down criminals, no matter how many years later.  As is mentioned in one of the articles I reviewed, murder victims are never forgotten by police.  As the amazing research in our country continues to progress, I hope that even more victims of crime like Saba Girmai are able to use science to find justice.

Social Media, Crime, Football, and a Small Town

Photo: Associated Press

Technology and the justice system have collided in an emotional and consequential way in the small steel town of Steubenville, Ohio.  The series of events started with an alleged repeated rape of a sixteen-year-old girl from neighboring West Virginia, a crime for which two members of the beloved high school football team and others will be standing trial, and developed into a national story involving “hactivists” and some harsh criticisms for the police department.

While the alleged rape occurred in August, it gained national attention just last month when a group known only as Anonymous hacked into a website for the football team and posted a video threatening to expose private information about everyone even assumed to be even marginally connected to the case.  The same “hactivist” group also shared a video in which a group of teenage boys are heard talking and laughing about the event.  Anonymous claims that the rape of a teenage girl is not being taken seriously because star athletes are protected in this town.

For his part, the chief of the Steubenville Police Department, William McCafferty, believes the assertions that his squad is covering for football players is unfair and have shed an unfair light on his community that it does not deserve.  To counter what they believed to be misplaced attacks on some residents of Steubenville, town leaders have established a website called SteubenvilleFacts.org.  Its intention, according to its developers, is to keep the public up-to-date on what it deems to be the correct facts and developments in the case.

Have you seen instances where you live in which it appears certain members of the community were given special treatment when alleged crimes were involved?

What do you think of the notion of “hactivists,” who use their controversial hacking skills to promote causes or shed light on what they believe to be injustices occurring around them?

Readers Have Spoken Loud and Clear – Top Blog Posts of 2012

SerialKillers_2

Thank you to everyone who has visited and subscribed to my blog  – it doesn’t go unappreciated.  When I first decided to create a blog, I was apprehensive at first.  Well let’s get serious, I was terrified.  I thought I’d be writing articles just for myself and no one would care about the posts I wrote, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I’ve grown to love writing posts about forensics, serial killers, and my writing adventures.  I have plans for more fun articles about crime, writing, and of course forensics and criminal profiling for this year.

Stay updated on my next book releases, short stories, interviews, crime and writing tidbits, and upcoming radio show episodes on Book & Crime Talk.

It seems that blog readers have spoken loud and clear.  You love reading about serial killers as much as I do!

Here are the top five posts of 2012:

1  Serial Killer Profile – An Inside Look at the Iceman

My Pick of 13 Interesting Facts about Serial Killers

3  Random & Interesting Serial Killer Facts

Take a Thrilling Leap into the Unknown and Celebrate!

2013

This is about the time that we take a good look at what we have done, what we want to do, make some plans or resolutions, and then we make a few changes for a brand new year.  It is exciting, it can be somewhat terrifying, but overall it feels good to clean the slate and begin again.  Along the way, we look at our blessings and take a moment to count them.  I know I do.

You cannot look back and regret anything or worry about the future and what it might bring.  It is a new year and the possibilities are truly endless.  Yes, there will be ups and downs, but that’s how we grow and appreciate what we do have in our lives.  So take that faithful leap into the unknown because you never know really what you can do unless you take the plunge.

As for me, 2013 will produce two new novels, one new mystery/thriller series, a few short stories, along with numerous cold cases to review.  I’m excited!  I appreciate so much all my faithful readers, followers, family, and friends.  Thank you all for making 2012 a wonderful year for me.  Cheers!

May your year be filled with an abundance of joy and plenty of laughter along with way!

Happy New Year!
